I considered drinking some, well, a lot of the Elven Wine to make me feel better. But then I decided that I didn't want to feel better.

Gwynn had been looking for Tim because she wanted to talk to him about Professor Arroway and the Ancient Greeks.

Finally, she went to his room and knocked gently.

"Come in." tim called. He was lying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Gwynn stuck her head in. "Feel like company, Tim?"

Tim looked up and managed a bit of a smile. As upset as he was, she was certainly a sight for sore eyes. "Yes please." he said. How did she do that? Show up just when he was most in need of cheering up?

Gwynn smiled softly and came in. She sat down on the bed next to him and squeezed his hand.

"What's wrong?"

"About ten years from now, by my calender, the city I'm from is going to...a lot of people are going to...I just got some very bad news."

he squeezed her hand, and noticed that he felt a lot more comfortable around her than he had in the past. Not that she'd made him uncomfortable, but he just somehow felt less axious.

He needed comforting because of strong distress. She just wasn't sure how to go about this.

Finally, she reclined next to him and hugged him to her a bit shyly as she stroked his hair. She had seen others comfort people like this and she hoped she was doing it right.

"Would you like to talk about it?"

"I'm not sure how to talk about it." Tim said softly. "I found out about something that's going to happen in my hometown in the future. Something really bad. And I can't get my mind around it. A lot of people are going to die, are going to be murdered."

He stopped talking and took a shaky breath. He hugged her back, still holding her hand.

"A war then?" Gwynn asked quietly. "Big enough to wipe out an entire village?"

"An unexpected one." Tim said. "In one attack they'll level two highly recognized and populated buildings, damage one more, and use public transportation, with innocent civilians in them, as the weapons." Tim said, trying to put it in terms that someone from the 12th century would get.

He was still holding her hand, and absently stroked it with his thumb.

Gwynn felt a wash of horror fill her at what he was saying.

"They massacred innocent civilians? Even in war you do not do such dishonour."

Gwynn was glad she was there with him to comfort him.

"new kind of war. They call it terrorism." he said. "Sadly kinda common when I'm from, but usually in other countries."

He took a deep breath, and finally turned to look at her. "I'm glad you're here." he said. "I thought I wanted to be alone, but, guess I was wrong."

She took note of that word so that she could ask one of her other friends about it and ask them explain it to her. However, she wouldn't ask Tim about it because he was already upset and she was here to comfort and not to upset.

She smiled into his eyes. "I'm glad I was able to be here to help. It is not good to be alone when you are hurting or shocked."

"Last time i was really upset was when my dad left." he said. "I camped out on the roof of our building for like, a week when I finally realized he wasn't coming home. Mom usually made me come in at bedtime of course."

"Your mother sounds like a wise lady," Gwynn said softly, still stroking his hair. "The last time I was really upset... well, I ended up dressing as a man and trying to prove to my father that I was just as good as any man."

Tim grinned. "And i'm guessing you suceeded. But you're way too pretty to make a convincing boy."

He liked her stroking his hair, and he continued to stroke her hand. She really did have beautifull hands.

Gwynn blushed, but nodded.

"He realized that I am every bit my father's daughter and not the type to become a demure and proper lady...or so I thought he had learned his lesson."

She was enjoying having him close and liked that he was holding her hand.

"So how did you disguise yorself as a boy?" he asked, brushing a hand through her hair. "Did you cut your hair?"

Gwynn nodded.

"I cut it pretty short... it was about half the length it is now. Apparently my hair grows very fast."
