After my earlier wanderings, I returned to my bunk, and found a postcard on the mattress.

I looked at the picture. Chinese countryside. T'ing. I debated not reading it.

"Dear Tim,

Your mother told me what happened, please write and let me know how things are.

T'ing"

That's it. no Love, no Sincerely, no Your Friend. Just, T'ing. Okay so it's a postcard, how mushy can those things be?

"The fact that the church is full of themselves is not a thought that surprises me, after all, they started the Crusades."

She looked at him. "You are really smart, Tim."

"Wait'll they get to the Inquisition." tim muttered.

He blushed. "Well I have my moments." he said grinning. "Now you teach me something." cue beavis and butthead laughter

"The Inquisition?"

She thought for a moment and then looked back at him. "The wind makes a different sound passing through each tree... like a voice. Not every tree sounds the same, even if they look the same."

"Very bad time in the Church's history." Tim said. "It involved burning people at the stake."

He looked at the trees around them. "Huh," he said. That's something that never occured to him. "Do you mean like, an oak sounds different than an apple tree? or is it like how no two snowflakes are alike?"

Gwynn nodded. "No two oak trees sound alike... just like the snowflakes are complete individuals." She might have put her hand on his shoulder. "My father taught me that if I'm in the woods and I can close my eyes, I'll hear the wind differently."

Actually, it was the Uncles who taught her that, but she didn't want Tim to know that her father had rarely been around when she was a child.

Tim's shoulder was very glad that she'd put her hand there. He closed his eyes and listened. At first he couldn't tell any difference.

Well for a moment all he could focus on was her voice. He started to wonder if he had a thing for girls with accents.
Then he relaxed a bit, though still acutely aware of her hand on his shoulder.
His head tilted suddenly when he did detect a difference in the sound of the wind. "Woah," he said. sounding nothing like Keanu

Gwynn sighed in happiness. "I'm so glad you can detect the difference!"

"Just barely." Tim said, opening his eyes and looking at her admiringly. "I'm a city boy, I kind of learned to just tune out any background noise. Although earlier I was trying to tune in instead."

"You'll get better with practice," she said with assurance.

She didn't move her hand. "I can teach you... if you like?"

She dropped her eyes shyly.

"I would like that." he said. His hand, still acting independantly, as his brain couldn't be trusted with such matters, moved to her shoulder as well.

"So, tell me about what it's like back home?" he asked. "I don't really know much about your, forgive the expression, point in history."

and if gwynn ever mentioned where he could hear it taht she knew how to use a sword, I forget if she has, he wouldn't mind learning a bit of that either.

Gwynn liked the feel of his hand on her shoulder.

Her face took on a softer light as she started talking. "My home is surrounded by the most beautiful forest that I have ever seen. Where I'm from... the uncles run what looks like a monastery, but it's really a safe haven for the hidden people of Sherwood."

"So, the whole hiding in Sherwood thing is still going on?" he asked. He looked around at the trees and listened as the wind blew through them. He imagined there could be Fae here, speaking as the leaves rustled. When the clouds rolled over it got rather dark, and he remembered the vision Hobson had shown him. Where not only good things could hide in the dark. He shivered slightly.

"Prince John thought to take the throne again. Then, King Richard died and I helped to put his son, Phillip, on the throne of England. In doing so, I made no friends of Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham."

"from what I've heard," tim said. "John and the Sheriff wren't too good at making friends anyway. Did your dad teach you all that stuff he's famous for? The archery, fighting, hiding in the woods?"

Gwynn's face lit up.

"My father did teach me a lot, and then so did Will Scarlett and Friar Tuck and others of the Merry Men." She smiled at him. "They taught me to listen to the forest and what it tells me. They taught me archery, sword-fighting and how to fight with daggers and how to throw them."

She blushed. "Is this what they call small talk or do you really want to know about me?"

"I guess it could be considered small talk." tim said. he squeezed her shoulder a bit. "But I really do want to know about you. Plus I like how you smile when you talk about stuff."

He pondered a bit. "I should probably learn how to use a sword."

"I... I could teach you."

He smiled, both at her verbal reaction, and her nonverbal one. "I'd like that." He sat for a moment, just enjoying her company.

Gwynn was very much aware of Tim sitting close to her and she found that she rather liked this feeling. She turned her face to look at him, pleased that his hand was still on her shoulder.

"I heard you tell Adella that night that you were a grand champion or something?"

Tim snickered. "The official title, is Dread and Puissant Champion of the Fae. They like titles I think. Mostly it involved mediating disputes before they made the mortals uncomfortable enough to exile them again. Though twice now it's meant fighting monsters." you ain't seen nothing yet tim

"What gives mortals the right to exile the Fae?" She asked in bewilderment. "Monsters? Have monsters attacked you?"

"They stopped believing in them." Tim said. "When they came to America, it became uncouth, and silly to believe in such things. And so the Fae got kind of shunted into a place called the leeside. Not long ago they started finding their way back."

he shuddered. "Well Adella I count as a monster. The other one, I fought back home. The worst kind of monster. A human being who did god knows what to children. He got into the leeside and his appearance changed to match his soul."
