The road to hell was paved with good intentions, that's what they said. well Tim didn't know about that, but this hangover seemed to be a good metaphor for that. Some well meaning Fae had slipped some human spirits into the course of drinks the night before. Elven wine didn't come with hangovers.

By the time Tim stumbled from his room into the kitchen, it was much later than he usually liked to get up. Even on a Sunday. Actually he kind of liked the city on a Sunday. It was quieter than usual.

He drank five glasses of water, and one super sized cup of coffee before he felt awake enough to even think about what had gone on the night before.

There had been a few things being celebrated. Apparently the Fae were as passionate about Hurling as the Mortal world was about Football, and the local team had won the Hidden World Cup. Then there was toasting the marriage of Tim's mother and Faust, then something about the Superbowl.

"Hey." Neil yawned, coming in looking disgustingly refreshed. "What are you doing here?"

"What do you mean?"

"Weren't you supposed to catch a train up north? Something about a big party or something way up in the ass of nowhere Scotland?"

"...Fuck."

[For the girlfriend.]

Portals were a wonderful thing, Gwynn had thought. Completely wonderful and they usually got her places that she wanted to go.

This time, her portal had been scheduled for Friday night to Tim's place, but somehow there had been a delay and then she was routed through some place where there was a lot of fighting happening. Gwynn, of course, got involved with the fighting because she couldn't seem to get to her next portal sight without going through the two armies.

Which is why a slightly cranky Gwynn was knocking on Tim's door. She was sure Neil would let her in. She figured that she could wait for him to get back from the party he'd invited her to and then explain why she hadn't shown up as expected.

Oh Good this was probably Gwynn wanting to know why he hadn't shown up. The coffee was still working it's magic, and he hadn't done any morning grooming yet.

This was one of the joys of long term serious relationships. And it was a true test, if you could look at someone in the morning before they were ready for the world, and still see the person you were attracted to, it was a good sign.

Tim opened the door and remembered that he'd gotten a key made for her. "Gwynn, hey, c'mon in. I'm sorry I'm running a little late." Very late, Tim. Very.

She gave him a confused look as she came into the apartment. She looked him up and down and became more than a little concerned.

"Tim, why aren't you in Scotland?" She sighed, shaking her head. "I hope that it wasn't on account of me. I know I'm two days late and you're no doubt cross about that, but I promise you that it wasn't my intention to not show up. That bloody Portalocity..."

Hurry up, coffee. "Okay, I'm not in Scotland, because I wound up drinking something other than what I thought I was drinking, and overslept a lot. I actually called Portalocity to see what was up when I couldn't get through to you. I got one of those 'the number you are trying to reach is out of synch' messages when I tried to call you. They said something about having to divert some portals and then they got into the jargon. I'm pretty sure they do that to shut the customers up."

Gwynn groaned in frustration. "They diverted my portal through some kind of place that there was a revolt going on. I had to get through that to get to the next damn portal."

She frowned in concern. "What were you given to drink?"

Hobson emerged from the kitchen with tea for Gwynn, and asprin for Tim.

"Well I'm glad you're okay, and kinda glad I didn't know about you having to fight while I was drunk." Tim frowned. "I thought I was drinking Elven Wine. I didn't need to deal with a hangover. But I think I wound up with some whiskey, and possibly a guiness or two also."

"I'm glad that you're all right, Tim," Gwynn said, putting a gentle arm around him. "I think that Elven Wine is strong enough without people adding things to it."

"I agree. I also didn't realize until today how long it's been since I've drunk anything alcoholic that wasn't elven wine." He hugged her back. "But now I've gotta figure out what to do about Scotland. I don't think I'll get there in time for what was going on, hopefully they'll forgive me."

"You could just tell them the truth?"

"Actually that might work very well." Tim said.

"It's like this one kid told me around midterms here." Neil cut in. "Just tell them you're American, they won't expect as much."
