Romm 314 Mid morning

Some people had cellphones, and thus could call home from anywhere they wanted. I had the phone already in the dorm room and a pre-paid phone card. Today I knew my mom had the evening shift at Micky D's. She decided to forego the usual over protective Mother bit and didn't make me promise to call the moment I arrived. She told me to call after two days.

"Hey Hobson...yeah I got here just fine. Could you...yeah, yeah no Fae yet. Mostly regular people. One witch I think. And I'm not sure what Artie is. Could you put Mom on?...Hi Ilya. Yes I'm washing behind my ears. Could you...yes I used the conditioner. Actually as long as I've got you on the phone, are Banniks related to Snorkacks?...Sweedish I think. Never heard of them huh. Me neither till tuesday. Could you put Mom on?...Runyon how are you? Yeah, yeah lot's of pretty girls." I had to hold the phone away from my ear for a minute. "No Teleri," I sigh. "Not prettier than you. What are you all doing there anyway? Put Mom on please....Mom! Finally. What's going on there? You told everybody? Yes I hear Neil in the background and no I'm going to...why is he saying that in front of you? Yeah I got settled in just fine. Lotta interesting people. My roommate? Yeah he seems cool. Haven't run into him too often so far. Yeah I'm gonna try to see if anyone's hiring. Shoot, this card doesn't have indefinite minutes. Listen Mom I'll call again next week okay? Yes Teleri I played the tape. I hope I never need it, thanks. Okay, bye."

Wiring? Hmmmm. "No, not exactly." She took another bite of her pear. When she finished the bite she asked, "what have you heard from the locals, then?"

"Oh boy." Tim sighed. "Let's see, Gremlins, Zombies, Snow Monsters, uncooperative laundry machines, and Emo. And I'm sure I'm forgetting something."

"How does it work?" She asked, pointing to the phone. Then picking up on Tim's response, "Emo? That's a kind of bird, isn't it?"

"I think it's a fancy way of saying depression." Tim said. He strode to the phone. "I don't know the technical details." he said. "But you pick this up," and handwavily he demonstrated how to use the phone.
